CATBIRD BABY ANNOUNCES INNOVATIVE NEW CARRIER

After much anticipation, Catbird Baby would like to announce our new and improved carrier! It’s what every new mom has been asking for: a baby carrier that works for infants AND toddlers WITHOUT AN INSERT! Our new design features dual-adjustable buckles, memory foam straps, and a unique “cincher” that allows the carrier to instantly adapt to fit an itty-bitty newborn or wrangle your tired two-year-old. We’ve specifically designed this carrier to make babywearing easy and comfortable for a variety of bodies including moms who had c-sections, those with shorter torsos, and dad who prefer crossable straps. Without a bulky structured waistband, it fits easily in any diaper bag. Beth Leistensnider, Catbird Baby owner and founder says “We think our new carrier is going to be a game-changer in the baby gear space. Up until now, there have been so few good options.”

Some may ask how the pikkolo compares to other carriers on the market today; the pikkolo has a forward-facing option and has undergone almost 9 years of rigorous field testing before release.

Covers more than just carriers!

Cover snapped over Chicco infant car seat

The first winter after we started catbirdbaby, we had a realization: the winter carrier covers on the market then only fit narrow-based carriers. This was 2005-06 and there were not nearly the options available then as there are today! We developed the first babywearing cover that was specifically designed for wider-based, ergonomic baby carriers, accommodating a baby’s legs when seated in a carrier in the typical “M” position you see in many carriers today.

With our carrier cover you can also snap it over the top of your carrier (will fit any two-shouldered wide-base baby carrier) before you put it on. Then it’s easy to use in a back carry, and to just tuck your child’s feet in after you have the carrier on and properly adjusted.

But beyond babywearing, our carrier covers area are also excellent for use in car seats and strollers. Especially in car seats, their strength is that they do not interfere with the car seat’s intended function as they do not go behind the baby and the seat, or between the baby’s body and the straps of the harness. Depending on the width of your car seat’s top bar, you can snap the flaps of the cover over the bar, or tuck baby’s legs into the pocket and then tuck around baby’s body (after dressing in layers).

Recently, Dr. Alicia Baer, aka “The Carseat Lady” included our cover on her blog as a car-seat-safe option for winter warmth, as well. Although the same safety concerns regarding compression are not present for strollers as with car seats, our covers can also be used as a stroller blanket. And since they fit kids’ legs up till age 2 or beyond, they even make a great lap blanket in the car seat for toddlers/preschoolers.

Our covers are available in two versions: All-Fleece, which is an outer layer of 200 weight polar fleece with a 100-weight microfleece lining. Our Microfiber version has an outer shell of water- and wind-resistant microfiber with a 200-weight polar fleece lining. All are one size fits up to approximately age 2 (about 37-8″ tall) and featured an elasticized foot pocket for your child’s feet/legs.

A Mei Tai for Mighty Gabriel

October 10, 2015
MightyGabriel_blogpost

We have a few new mei tais coming out this fall (we’ll tell you more about those next week), but wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about one in particular and the special place it holds in our heart.

special edition mei tai for Gabriel

A mei tai for Mighty Gabriel

Our newest mei tai pattern is called Mighty Gabriel’s Forest and it’s named for a beautiful little boy whose life was much too short. Before he was born, his parents were gifted a Catbird Baby carrier, by a member of our team, that they would never be able to use. No parent should have to go through what they have. And at Catbird Baby we want to honor baby Gabriel and bring awareness to the disease that took him from us.

Gabriel Anthony Allen was born on June 24, 2015 with a genetic disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy, or SMA. The diagnosis came when he was just four weeks old. We had never heard of it before; neither had his parents. SMA is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat, or breathe. It is the number one genetic cause of death for infants.

Gabriel in Hospital

Gabriel was diagnosed with SMA when he was 4 weeks old and spent 30 days in the hospital.

Gabriel Outside

Once home, Mighty Gabriel was able to spend some time outside in his backyard forest with the help of his special wagon.

Gabriel spent his 64 days of life surrounded by love. While his body was failing, his mind was sharp. He smiled. He loved music and being outside with his parents and three-year-old sister. He was brave and mighty.

Gabriel’s backyard is a forest of trees filled with deer, rabbits and foxes. He never grew up to run and explore this wonderland or learn to skip rocks alongside his sister. But we know that his spirit lives on in the whisper of the wind, the rustling of the leaves, in the playfulness and purposefulness that is nature ; his spirit lives on in Mighty Gabriel’s Forest.

A nature inspired design with trees, deer, foxes and rabbits that remind us of Gabriel and his time spent outdoors.

A portion of all Mighty Gabriel’s Forest mei tai sales will go to cureSMA, an organization that funds research for the treatment of and cure for SMA.
